Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ successfully flight-tested by DRDO

  • Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’, launched from an indigenously-developed helicopter, was successfully flight-tested at high-altitude ranges
  • The flight-test was jointly conducted by the teams of scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Army and Indian Air Force, as part of the user validation trials.

About HELINA

  • It is helicopter-launched versions of third-generation anti-tank guided missiles (the Nag missile system)
  • It is capable of defeating battle tanks with conventional armour and explosive reactive armour in all weather conditions.
  • It have been designed and developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
  • It is guided by an Infrared Imaging Seeker (IIR) operating in the Lock on Before Launch mode.
  • It is one of the most advanced Anti-Tank weapons in the world
  • Operation: It has the ability to engage targets in both direct hit and top attack modes.
    • Top Attack Mode: After launch, the missile must climb swiftly and travel at a predetermined altitude before plunging on top of the target.
    • Direct Attack Mode: The missile descends to a lower height and strikes the target directly.

Anti-Tank Missile(ATGM)

  • It is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy heavily armoured military vehicles, which can be transported by a single soldier

Other ATGMs developed in India

  • Amogha-1

    • Range: 2.8km.
    • It is under development by Bharat Dynamics at Hyderabad.
    • It is the maiden missile designed and tested by Bharat Dynamics and will be produced in two versions.
    • The land version has already been tested.
  • Nag Missile

    • It is also known as 'Prospina' for the land-attack version,
    • It is Indian third-generation, all-weather, fire and forget, anti-tank guided missile
    • Range: 500m to 20km
    • It have a ten-year maintenance-free shelf life.
    • It can be launched from land and air-based platforms.
    • The land version is currently available for integration on the Nag missile carrier (NAMICA).
    • It has been developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program
