India Launches First Carbon Capture Testbeds for Cement Sector

AspectDetails
EventLaunch of India's first cluster of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) testbeds for the cement sector.
DateMay 11, 2025 (National Technology Day).
Initiative ByDepartment of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
ObjectiveCombat industrial carbon emissions and support India's Net Zero by 2070 target.
Focus SectorCement industry (a hard-to-abate sector).
ModelPublic-Private Partnership (PPP) involving academia and industry.
Key GoalsDevelop CCU technologies, promote academia-industry collaboration, and demonstrate scalable decarbonization solutions.
Technologies UsedOxygen-enhanced calcination, CO₂ mineralization, catalysis, vacuum swing adsorption, and carbon-reducing interventions.
Testbeds1. Ballabhgarh, Haryana: JK Cement + NCCBM (2 TPD CO₂ capture).
2. IIT Kanpur + JSW Cement: CO₂ mineralization.
3. IIT Bombay + Dalmia Cement: Catalyst-based CO₂ capture.
4. CSIR-IIP, IIT Tirupati, IISc + JSW Cement: Vacuum Swing Adsorption.
5. IIT Madras & BITS Pilani, Goa + Ultratech Cement: Carbon-reducing interventions.
Broader ImpactScalable decarbonization, reduced carbon footprint, and enhanced research in green cement and sustainable materials.
