Recent SightingSpotted near Yamuna floodplains in Delhi, first recorded sighting in the city since the 1940s. Location: Palla village (tri-junction of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh).
Description- Subspecies of Grey Wolf, native to Indian subcontinent & Southwest Asia.<br>- Nocturnal, apex predator, hunts in small packs, less vocal.<br>- Size: Males (100-130 cm), Females (87-117 cm).<br>- Adaptation: Lacks thick winter coat, suited for warmer climates.
Habitat & Distribution- Found in scrublands, grasslands, pastoral agro-ecosystems.<br>- Range: From Israel to the Indian subcontinent.<br>- Indian states: Maharashtra, Gujarat, MP, Rajasthan, Haryana, UP, etc.
Conservation Status- CITES: Appendix I.<br>- Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Schedule I.
Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary- Located in Karnataka, India's second protected area for wolves.<br>- Area: 332 hectares; features scrub forests, hills, and natural caves.
Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary- Established in 1976 in Jharkhand, India's first wolf sanctuary.
