Working of e-Sanjeevani teleconsultation facility reviewed
- Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare visited the eSanjeevani teleconsultation facility at the CGHS headquarters on 14 January .
- He witnessed the sessions where consulting doctors provided tele-consultation.
eSanjeevani
- It is a doctor to doctor telemedicine system implemented under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.
- It aims to connect all the 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres established under Ayushman Bharat.
- It extends the reach of specialized healthcare services to masses in rural areas and isolated communities.
- It tackles the issues of uneven distribution of healthcare personnel and infrastructure by bridging the divide that exists between urban and rural, rich and poor, in terms of access to healthcare services.
- Launched in 2019.
- First state to launch this service was Andhra Pradesh.
eSanjeevani OPD
- It is the first-ever online OPD (outpatient) consultation service offered by the government of India to citizens.
- It was rolled out on 13th of April 2020 during the first lockdown in the country.
- Aim: to provide healthcare services to patients in their homes.
- Process involves a structured and safe teleconsultation between a doctor and a patient through online mode (eSanjeevani OPD).
- At the end of these remote consultations, eSanjeevani generates electronic prescriptions which can be used for sourcing medicines.
- eSanjeevani OPD portal is developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Mohali.
- Doctors on the service are drawn by the state governments.
- The service is also available on mobile application.

Advantages of telemedicines
- Transportation: Patients can avoid spending fuel or wasting time in traffic with video consultations.
- No loss of livelihood: Individuals can schedule a consultation during a work break or even after work hours.
- Childcare/Eldercare: Those who struggle to find care options can use telemedicine solutions.
- Even when the internet penetration in the country is below 50%, this innovative digital health initiative has been able to defeat the tyranny of geography, distance, and time and establish itself as a parallel stream of healthcare services delivery.
- It is relatively more popular in tier II and tier III cities.
